Liposome terms, in plain language
The vocabulary used across the Lipologics technical documents.
- Liposome
- A microscopic vesicle formed from a phospholipid bilayer surrounding a water-filled core.
- Phosphatidylcholine (PC)
- The phospholipid that forms the liposome wall. HNOVA™ uses plant-derived PC.
- Bilayer
- Two layers of phospholipid molecules, tails inward and heads outward, forming the vesicle membrane.
- Encapsulation efficiency
- The proportion of the active that is entrapped within the vesicles rather than free in solution.
- Hydrophilic / lipophilic
- Water-loving and fat-loving. Hydrophilic actives sit in the core; lipophilic actives sit in the bilayer.
- Particle size
- The diameter of the vesicles, measured in nanometres. HNOVA™ targets 50 to under 200 nm.
- Polydispersity index (PDI)
- A measure of how uniform the particle sizes are within a batch.
- Zeta potential
- A measure of surface charge that indicates how stable a dispersion is against aggregation.
- Bioavailability
- The proportion of an administered active that reaches systemic circulation and can act.
- Certificate of Analysis (CoA)
- The per-batch document reporting analytical results against specification.
